"Honu" Hawaiian name for Turtle - come spend a day with Kona Ocean Adventures

"Honu" Hawaiian name for turtle: The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), also known as the green turtle, black (sea) turtle, or Pacific green turtle,[3] is a large sea turtle of the family Cheloniidae. It is the only species in the genus Che...lonia.[4] Its range extends throughout tropical and subtropical seas around the world, with two distinct populations in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.[5] The common name comes from the usually green fat found beneath its carapace.

What our guests are saying:
“The BEST DIVE OPERATION IN THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS!”

Reviewed June 20, 2012 NEW

Laure and Danny are the BEST! I have never encountered such great service with a dive company. They communicated well before the dive, during the dive, and after diving with them. Danny knows the fish and the waters of his domain better than any other master diver I have seen. Laure is always making sure you are comfortable and safe, not to mention that she is an awesome dive master as well. They took extra time just so we could swim with some passing dolphins. The food they had prepared for you during your two dives was great ( Great Salsa and tortilla roll-ups). Danny and Laure raised the bar on what diving should be. The boat was a great dive boat with new equipment. These two were just awesome. The best day of diving ever! I highly recommend them. you will not be disappointed.
“It was like boating with friends who are experts.”

A great Diving Experience!!!”5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2012 NEW

If you're looking for real people, real conversation, and a knowledgeable dive guide don't look any further than Captain Danny. We had only been on 7 dives prior to this and wanted to be on a boat that wasn't overcrowded and you were just a number. We found it!!! Danny has a great talent and eye for being able to find everything from eels to octopus and not just one. He is very patient and aware of what's going on and he knew that we wanted to see more than just some pretty fish. We hadn't been in the water in the ocean in over a year and he made it feel like yesterday. Then the icing on the cake is the stories, between he and Mike who piloted the boat we heard so many stories, and laughed and they enjoyed us sharing our stories with them as well. Truly great people, the kind that you go home feeling like you've made some new friends. WI know the next time we dive it will definitely be with them.

Review of Kona Ocean Adventures

KONA OCEAN ADVENTURES, The only reason we'd return to the big island.
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2013
Kona Ocean Adventures was great and when we make a return trip to Kona they are the reason why. We experienced nearly everything the big island had to offer but were particularly pleased with the three excursions we made with Kona Ocean Adventures. These included a half day charter, a manta ray night charter and a two tank dive. My wife and I were vacationing with family and friends and our group consisted of my four month old daughter, our nieces and nephews ages 3, 5, 8, and 10yrs, my brother and sister in law and two close friends. We were all extremely pleased with the service, the attitude and willingness of KOA to ensure EVERYONE had a good trip. As previously mentioned we were so satisfied with our KOA the first day we booked two MORE activities with them that same week. We cannot say enough good things about the KOA staff especially Capt Pono, Lindsay, Joy and Seth. The level of service was unparalleled with any we experienced on this trip or others in the past. Highlights of our trips included swimming with dolphins, learning the history of the island, swimming and diving with manta's, diving with sharks, rays and everything else you can imagine. If you visit Kona and do not seek them out you are missing an unforgettable, brag to your family, boast to your friends, once in a lifetime, great time!

“Best guides in the business” I am a professional concierge and destination manager, here in Hawaii. I have sent several guests out with Danny and Laure and the responses are always the same! "What a fantastic crew!" "Personalized every detail for our family or group." Can't wait to go out with them again." I will always send my guests to Danny and Laure. Thank you so much for taking care of my guests, making my job easier, and creating lasting memories for each and every one of them!

“Over the Top Adventure and Service” With so many choices for ocean adventure it was hard for a family of six to pick one. That's why we went with KOA because they packed more adventure into one trip than any other outfit. We had experienced snorkelers and scuba newbies that wanted to swim with dolphins and see spectacular reefs. We accomplished all and then some with a private charter. Captain Danny and Laure, along with Kent took us south to Kealakekua Bay for an introductory dive and snorkel combination. On the way spinner dolphin pods came close so we slipped into the water for nose to nose snorkel! Laure was on top of everything noticing that one snorkeler wasn't quite as comfortable, so Laure handed out a noodle and a new mask that made the open water easy. At our dive spot the newbies followed Capt. Danny for a scuba tour around the reef. Nobody knows a reef like Capt. Danny. Eels, fish, octopus and even a frog (angler) fish. We would never has seen so much without his experience. There simply is no other experience like scuba, watching air bubbles from your exhale float to the surface like prayers rising in an underwater cathedral. Kealakekua Bay was our final stop for unsurpassed coral reef beauty. Snorkel guide Kent was able to find unique creatures lounging among the coral while keeping a watchful eye on the kids. Videos and snapshots on the web are not the same as snorkeling in a coral garden. Lunch was wonderful on deck with ample drinks, sandwiches, avocados, and of course awesome pineapple. The finale was an unexpected surprise of whale watching on the route back to port. I guess the only untapped adventure still on our list for the next visit is the manta dive.

For your adventure be sure to communicate your priorities and your ocean experience up front. Capt. Danny and Laure really want everyone to have the best experience so we made sure to mention what we hoped to see, how comfortable we were in the water, and let them decide how to accomplish the mission. As always, our family approaches open water adventures with patience, politeness, and respect for all. The only thing that belongs on deck is your full attention and your waterproof camera. Stow the rest and hang loose Hawaiian style.

“Best ocean trip ever!” We have been coming to Kona for 13 years and typically do an ocean adventure trip each time. We usually have a wonderful time, but this time - our first with Kona Ocean Adventures - was easily the best yet. I came across this company while researching night snorkeling trips to see mantas. We had only one night we could do the trip and sadly, they were booked. But Laure wanted to make sure we got a great trip in and created a special dolphin adventure for us the next afternoon. I'm so glad she did.
Laure and Danny made us feel like special friends right away. They were encouraging and super helpful with getting the kids (8 and 4) in and out of the water and allowing us as much time as we wanted in the water. They knew we really wanted to swim with dolphins and didn't rest until it happened. We spent about an hour hanging out with huge pods of dolphins before heading off to completely amazing snorkeling at a spot we had never even heard of before.
Tasty snacks and munchies were an added bonus. We look forward to our next trip with them and will certainly recommend this trip as a must do for all of our house guests.

So glad I picked Kona Ocean Adventures!” I booked the manta ray snorkel as a birthday gift for my husband. There were many companies to choose from but I definitely made the right choice. Other boats had 20+ people. We chose a smaller boat and got personal treatment, including homemade salsa, fruit, cookies, veggies, and hot cocoa. Laure and Danny were wonderful and made the experience so great. The snorkeling was surreal (not scary at all!) and we even swam with bottlenose dolphins! Don't get shuffled around- small group, personal attention, yummy snacks. Have already recommended it to 3 people and it was just last night! Mahalo nui loa, Danny and Laure!

“Highlight of a 10 day Big Island Visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2013 NEW
Oh boy, where to begin? My family enjoyed 10 days on the Big Island and 3 of them with Kona Ocean Adventures (KOA). There were 11 people in our group that ranged in age from 3 months to 41 years old. Besides the baby we had four kids 3, 6, 8, and 10 years old.

The crew was punctual and professional for all 3 trips. There were no hidden charges or unfortunate surprises with the services. We used the same boat for all trips – it was very clean with plenty of seating for our group. The boat had a canopy that covered at least ½ of us at any time. It was easy to keep the baby out of the sun.

Trip 1 – snorkeling to the South of Kona. We were not in the water more than 15 minutes before we chanced upon a pod of dolphins. We counted at least a dozen and quickly jumped off the boat to join them for a swim. Once back on the boat, we traveled to Kealakekua Bay and enjoyed incredible snorkeling. The Capt (Pono) and Lindsey could have not been kinder or more accommodating for our very active group. My 6 year old daughter immediately took to Lindsay and they snorkeled together for an hour. Capt. Pono graciously volunteered to keep an eye on the sleeping baby while the mom got to spend some time snorkeling near the boat. Once we climbed back aboard, Pono had prepared a wonderful lunch of wraps, fresh pineapple, chips, salsa and a few local specialties that you would only expect to see at a luau.

Trip 2 - night dive/snorkel with manta rays. Three in our group wanted to dive and the rest chose to snorkel. One extra crew member joined us - dive master Joy. She checked all our gear and gave us detailed instructions on how the dive could best be enjoyed. It was an amazing experience. We saw 23 mantas that night including “Big Bertha” with her 14 foot span. The 3, 6, 8 and 10 year old joined Lindsay and the other adults to snorkel with the rays. Once again Capt Pono was on baby duty while mom got a few minutes to swim with the mantas. KOA provided wetsuits and gear for everyone on board (including the kids) and they had hot cocoa and fresh fruit waiting for us once we returned to the boat.

Trip 3 – ½ Day dive. Just the 3 divers went on this two-tank trip. The crew was Capt Pono and dive master Seth. Seth set up all our gear and led us through extraordinary underwater scenery. We found a 4 foot white-tip shark, several eels, octopus and one eagle ray. We enjoyed diving through multiple arches and looking over the edge of the “drop-off.” Once again we found a pod of dolphins and enjoyed watching them jump and play in the wake of our boat for several minutes.

Even though a month has passed, my kids are still talking about Lindsey and the manta rays! Everyone in our group had an amazing time and cannot find enough adjectives to describe the experiences with Kona Ocean Adventures.
